GROW Training Programmes

The GROW Project delivers hands-on training focused on Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) to build green skills, promote circular economy practices, and support sustainable employment in Nigeria and Mozambique.

Training under GROW begins with capacity building for TVET teachers and institutional managers.

Through a dedicated Train-the-Trainers programme, educators are equipped with updated knowledge on CDW management, circular economy principles, and sustainable construction practices.

This training also strengthens their ability to deliver courses using modern, learner-centred and blended teaching approaches, while promoting inclusive and gender-responsive learning environments. This ensures that GROW training is embedded within TVET institutions beyond the life of the project.

specialised CDW management training

The project also delivers specialised CDW management training for learners, including unemployed youth and construction workers. Participants gain practical skills in reducing, sorting, reusing, and recycling construction and demolition waste, as well as applying selective demolition techniques and safe waste-handling practices on construction sites. Health, safety, and environmental standards are fully integrated into the training to prepare participants for real-world work conditions.

In response to the growing role of technology in the construction sector, GROW includes training on digital and smart technologies for construction waste management. Participants are introduced to the use of tools such as drones and digital data systems to assess, monitor, and report construction waste more effectively. This training strengthens digital competence and supports smarter, more efficient waste management practices on construction sites.

To support job creation and self-employment, the project provides green entrepreneurship and employability training. This component helps participants understand circular economy business models and explore opportunities to transform construction waste into marketable products. Training also covers basic business planning, financial literacy, and employability skills to improve access to jobs and support the creation of micro-enterprises in the green economy.

All training components are brought together through a pilot training programme, which has been implemented with at least 100 learners across Nigeria and Mozambique, ensuring a minimum of 30% women participation. The pilot includes work-based learning opportunities, engagement with construction companies, and alignment with national certification and accreditation systems. This allows the GROW training model to be tested, validated, and prepared for replication and scale-up.
