APODISSI and LAWMA paid an educational visit to Honeytreat Trade Academy’s construction model centre facility to discuss the upcoming training of GROW train of trainers (TOT) programme.
To align with the National Board for Technical Education’s requirements, the GROW curriculum is set to undertake an accreditation process that will benefit young people across Nigeria, enabling them to earn a certified construction and demolition (C&D) waste management course free of charge, at their own pace, and irrespective of location.
The engagement with Honeytreat Academy’s Business Manager, Kate Nyong; Centre Manager, Emmanuel Akande; and Head of Trainers, Lekan Akerele, underscored the Centre’s commitment to the skills development of Nigerian youths, and its dedication to supporting hands-on skills development through the GROW project.
As a certified Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) model centre, the school is equipped with standard facilities for electrical installation, plumbing and wiring, woodwork and carpentry, painting, and bricklaying, positioning it well in line with the GROW project’s objectives in the field of construction and demolition waste management.
Elizabeth Ademola, Circular Economy Expert at LAWMA, emphasised the importance of internship placements and connecting trainees with the right stakeholders, enabling them to acquire job-ready skills and apply what they learn through the training.
Zainab Suleiman, from APODISSI, highlighted the sustainability of the programme, with a long-term aim for the developed modules to remain free and accessible to all Nigerian youths seeking to build their skills in construction and demolition waste management, at no cost. All GROW training materials will be uploaded on the Smart Step eLearning platform. The platform currently has 2500+ users and 8 career tracks. All courses are freely accessible to everyone interested to learn.
Abbas Suliat and Oluwakemi Kunle-Oyewo emphasised the need to adhere to the GROW standard in conjunction with the school’s requirements, in order to deliver excellent, seamless training for both trainers and students.
This engagement reflects the collaborative, ground-up approach that defines GROW: building capacity in green, digital, and entrepreneurial skills for construction and demolition waste management, one strong partnership at a time.
